IROQUOIS LAWYER ACTIVIST ROBERTA JAMIESON INVESTED AS MEMBER OF ORDER OF CANADA
Jamieson, a Mohawk from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, was the 1st First Nations woman to receive a law degree. She was Commissioner of the Indian Commission of Ontario (1985-89), then Ombudsman (1989-99), and past-Chief of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. President and CEO of Indspire, a charity supporting post-secondary education and training for Indigenous people, she has been named three times to the Women’s Executive Network’s “Canada’s Most Powerful Women.” In the field of dispute resolution, she has been a Goodman Fellow, a Winkler Institute Fellow, and Mary Parker Follett Award recipient. For social justice efforts, she received Harmony, Deo Kernahan Memorial, National Aboriginal Achievement, and Indigenous Peoples Council Awards. In 2004, she became CEO and President of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, supporting Indigenous youth through scholarship assistance, and is Executive Producer of the foundation’s awards program.
