TLINGIT NATIVE RIGHTS ACTIVIST/EDUCATOR KAA.OOSTI (ANDREW P. HOPE III) DIED
Born in 1950, Hope’s family was known for its role in Alaskan Native politics with both the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska and Alaska Native Brotherhood. Andrew was also involved, but also focused on poetry & tribal knowledge. Earning a Master’s degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in 1972, he co-founded Tlingit Readers-a non-profit publishing house dedicated to Tlingit culture. He developed a tribal knowledge of clan lineages through the “Tlingit Country” map and worked on a spelling system for the language. Hope organized the 1st Conference of Southeast Alaska Tradition Bearers & Honoring Alaska’s Indigenous Literature Awards. He co-founded both the United Tribes of Alaska & Southeast Alaska Native Educators Association. Hope worked as Regional Coordinator, University of Alaska’s Rural Systemic Initiative, and as Administrator, Sitka Tribe of Alaska before becoming Executive Director of Sharing Our Knowledge: Conference of Tlingit Tribes and Clans.
